Pathway out of homelessness
Auckland City Council and 11 central and non-government agencies – including Housing New Zealand, Auckland City Mission, New Zealand Police and the Ministry of Social Development – recently signed an agreement in a bid to end rough sleeping in Auckland's CBD by 2022.
The agencies that have signed the Memorandum of Understanding are all part of the Auckland Homeless Steering Group. This is focused on the coordination and sequencing of services so that homeless people are encouraged into long-term accommodation with the appropriate support to assist their success. The group also targets those at risk, such as mental health patients leaving care and inmates leaving prison, before they end up on the streets.
The Auckland Homeless Steering Group is committed to improving systems and services to prevent people from becoming homeless as well as providing rough sleepers with a pathway out of homelessness.
The work of this group is incorporated into the council's Homeless Action Plan, which focuses on how different stakeholders with different business outcomes can work together so there are successful results for homeless people and for the city.
