ArtWeek 2016 - Some of the highlights

News story

Artweek in The Central City, 8 – 16 October 2016

Artweek 2016 has launched. This visual arts celebration is an exciting gateway to experience art up close. The growing success of the event is due to the shared enthusiasm and collaboration with business owners like you, residents and other agencies.

We received very positive feedback from last year’s Artweek, so we’re stepping it up a notch further with more art activations and collaborations that will bring out the unique personality of the heart of the city.

Here are some of the highlights:

Guided Walks - from 8 October

Heart of the City’s Guided Walks are free tours showcasing the city’s unique art – both in public spaces and also behind closed doors of some of the city centre’s finest corporate art collections. To join a tour, participants must book a spot at www.heartofthecity.co.nz/artweek/at-walks-of-art.

Changing Lanes - Laneway Art 8 - 16 October

Six laneways in the city centre will be activated to highlight the changing nature of urban environments. Keep an eye out for the temporary artistic treatments at these locations:

  • St Matthew in the City
  • Corner Kingston and Albert Streets (District Court)
  • Lower Vulcan Lane
  • Durham Lane
  • Durham Street East (between High Street and Queens Street)
  • Exchange Lane

Late Night Art - 12 October, 5pm-9pm

Late Night Art is the centrepiece of Artweek and signals in a raft of pop-up installations and art activities through the central city. Te Hā o Hine Place, Khartoum Place and the Auckland Art Gallery will once again serve as the hub for great food, lively music and other art collaborations.

Arting Zones - 12 October 7.30am-9pm

A series of art projects created by students from the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning will be created and installed in spaces around the central city as part of Late Night Art. Below is a map of these installation sites. The students and their tutor will be installing their masterpieces from 7.30am and these will be removed after 9pm.

ArtWeek 2016 is an adventurous and creative event that brings people into the city centre in appreciation of arts and culture. Find out more by visiting www.heartofthecity.co.nz/artweek.
