Signage Trading and Events in Public Places Bylaw - Now open for public comment

News story
Friday 5 Sep 2014
Auckland Council and Auckland Transport have jointly drafted new region-wide signage bylaw which will be open for public feedback from Wednesday 3 September to Friday 3 October 2014.

The new bylaw will regulate display of signs that are on, or visible from roads and other public places and aims to protect pedestrians and motorists from poorly designed or located signs.

The proposed bylaw seeks to ensure users of footpaths and other public places can move freely and safely, and that businesses still have the opportunity to use public spaces to promote their service, product, goods or event.

Proposals include regulations for:

portable signs (sandwich boards)
free standing signs
posters and street banners
veranda and window signage
signs advertising commercial sexual services

The bylaw includes general requirements for all signage (except election signs and billboards), and has further requirements for particular types of signage including portable signage, posters, event and real estate signage. It has been developed to work alongside the Proposed Auckland Unitary Plan.

More information, including a copy of the proposed bylaw, statement of proposal, frequently asked questions and an online submission form is available on the council’s website – www.shapeauckland.co.nz from 3 September 2014.
