What’s next for the City Rail Link

News story
Tuesday 28 Nov 2017

Works on the initial stages of the City Rail Link are well underway at Britomart Station, Commercial Bay and in Albert Street, with works progressing up towards the future Aotea Station next year as the project works towards its target completion date of March 2024.

As construction progresses, we get closer to the future of quick and easy public transport to and from Auckland’s city centre. The city is already seeing transformation concentrated around the CRL route, with both public and private sector developments. It’s an exciting time for Auckland as we go through the period of change needed to accommodate the growing number of people who live, work and visit here.

With construction comes impact - find out more below about the development response work City Rail Link, council and ourselves are doing with businesses to help navigate these challenges.

Next project stages in the city centre

  • Britomart (Contract 1 – see map below for contract phases)
    • New tunnel wall structure about halfway complete, in early 2018, steel beams will underpin the building across the walls and the building’s weight transferred
    • Design concepts for the new square
    • Mid 2018 – work starts to pile and excavate across lower Queen Street
    • Due to be complete around 2020
  • Albert Street (Contract 2)
    • 2018 – with excavation now almost complete between Wyndham and Swanson Streets, the tunnel box will start being built at the south end

Minimising construction impact

We are working closely with CRL and council on behalf of businesses to ensure as much as possible is being done to minimise the impact of the project and to help businesses navigate the challenges presented by construction. There are a number of initiatives underway including offering business mentors for businesses in the affected area, activations around the project area, such as Wednesdays on Wellesley, and traffic monitoring to ensure that people and goods can access and get around during the works.

In CRL’s recent update to council, they said that learnings from the traffic and pedestrian management of the early project stages will help them better manage these elements going forward.
