A new take on why the city centre is so important

News story
Monday 16 Oct 2017

Take a look at this inspiring new video outlining the renewed vision for the City Centre and waterfront.

The vision draws on the many and varied ways the city centre is quite so important for people in the rest of Auckland and New Zealand - whether they come to the CBD or not. With so many transformational projects underway, the Council group has identified key opportunities for aligning projects so they can deliver high quality urban environments alongside well-integrated public transport while being efficient with spending.

The money spent on city centre-specific programmes, including upgrades of streets and public spaces as well as a contribution to Heart of the City's destination marketing and pedestrian counts for the city centre, is collected from inner city businesses and residents rather than from the general rate. This targeted rate funding provides around $20m per year and Heart of the City has a place on the Auckland City Centre Advisory Board which advises council on how it is spent. Additional funding options for the next generation of changes are also being explored; recommendations will be made to council with the Long Term Plan later in 2017. Businesses will be invited to give their feedback on funding priorities and funding in early 2018.
