Opening up the Albert Park Tunnels to the public

News story
Monday 12 Feb 2018

A group of tourism and transport experts want to see the tunnels under Albert Park, sealed since the end of WWI, opened for public access.

Long-time tunnel champion Bill Reid, Waitomo Caves' Nick Andreef and strategic transport planner Nicolas Reid see the tunnels as providing another way for people to get around the city, as well as opening up unique spaces for businesses, including tourist operators.

The tunnels would provide a walking and cycling route between the east end of Victoria Street and Beach Road, avoiding the steep slopes of Albert Park and eastern Symonds Street and connecting the Grafton Gully and Nelson Street cycleways. Once the City Rail Link is complete, the Victoria Street entrance for Aotea Station would point directly to the tunnel entrance.

We think their idea has great potential as a point of difference for Auckland as well as adding a new attraction to the city centre and more ways to get around. We'll be watching with interest as they work through the feasibility of getting the project off the ground.

For more information about the project head to the Albert Park Tunnels facebook page.
