Results Just In for Winter and September Quarter

News story
Monday 16 Oct 2017

We’ve seen really positive results for the city centre over the past few months in the key performance areas we measure, showing that the city economy is performing well and that people continue to be attracted by what the city has to offer. Our own research is supported by Auckland city centre's economic and population growth figures as reported by Infometrics.

Quarterly spending trends

Our regular quarterly spend monitoring through Marketview shows that in the three months July - September consumer spending was up 5.2% in the city centre (compared to competitors +2.5%), with transactions up 1.6% (competitors +1.7%). Significant areas for growth were spending by international visitors, up 17.5% (competitors +12.2%) and the attractions (+21.2%), hospitality (+19.8%) and dining (+16.7%) sectors. All percentage increases compare to the same period last year.

See the Marketview September 2017 Quarter Results.

Quarterly pedestrian counts

The number of trips around the city centre by foot continues to grow, with pedestrian counts from July - September up by 4.4% compared to the same period last year. We expect to see this number continue to grow over the coming years as the city centre population grows, public transport uptake continues to rise and transformational city projects are completed.

Winter Campaign results: 3 July – 10 September

Our significant annual campaign promoting the city centre as a destination over the winter months has again returned clear results for campaign participants and the wider city. We brought back the successful Lovebites platform for a second year, celebrating the unique and wonderful stories behind our city centre businesses.

The Marketview report shows that spending during the campaign period was up by 8.4% year on year for the total city centre.

The campaign performed well online too, attracting hundreds of thousands of eyes to the Lovebites video clips and the Heart of the City website with all of its listings and city centre content.

  • 1 million Lovebites views (+45% year on year)
  • 155k clicks from digital ads to www.heartofthecity.co.nz (+59% year on year)
  • 741k website sessions for www.heartofthecity.co.nz (+7% year on year)
