City Centre Parking Changes

News story
Monday 13 May 2024

Auckland Transport has advised us of their intention to start charging for on-street carparking 24/7 in the city centre from the end of June. They sent a letter outlining this on 2 May. It can be read in full here. A map detailing the intended changes is below.

We understand the fiscal situation for Auckland Transport and we have long supported their demand-based approach to parking in the city centre. BUT what’s been proposed, and importantly how this has been announced with no discussion or consideration of impacts, isn’t strategic or good practice. There are many voices echoing a similar view.

Auckland Transport is currently developing a City Centre Parking Management Plan. This includes assessing needs and issues for the city centre and will work out, with community input, what the kerbside should best be used for and how it should be managed.

This out-of-the-blue announcement is out of step with the development of this plan and the planned engagement with the community. To the best of our knowledge, there is no evidence this decision is based on demand.

We appreciate there are different views on this, but to land this announcement at a difficult time for many people, and when affordable and safe parking at night is needed for those who don’t have other options, is not on. We’ve asked Auckland Transport to reconsider their approach.
