Rugby world cup 2011
The 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) is one of the biggest events on The Heart of City agenda. Hitting town over a 6 week period from 9 September 2011, the Rugby World Cup is expected to bring 85,000 international visitors to our shores.
Heart of the City views the Rugby World Cup as a major opportunity for Auckland CBD businesses - with an estimated $267 million of direct income to the Auckland region alone.
What is Heart of the City doing for the Rugby World Cup?
The Insiders Guide to Downtown Auckland
To ensure the 80,000+ domestic and international visitors experience all of the great things our diverse city has to offer, Heart of the City has developed a FREE visitor’s guide called The Insiders.
The guide splits the CBD into 6 distinct neighbourhoods Queen Street, City West, Arts Precinct, High Street, Britomart and Waterfront (see map on left for neighbourhood boundaries), in an effort to encourage visitors to explore the entire CBD, including the hidden secrets of the city. Each neighbourhood will be represented by an Insider, who will share their favourite things to do and visit in their neighbourhood. The guide will also profile a wide range of businesses as each neighbourhood will be supported by an additional section dedicated to business listings (with address, phone and website information).
In order to get our guide into the hands of these visitors, Heart of the City will distribute 100,000+ hard copies to key spots around the city including hotels, isites and key retail destinations. This will be supported by FREE downloadable applications of the guide on android, iphone and ipad as well as featuring on the BIG little city website.
The web based information goes live this July, and we hope that the guide will be useful information for businesses in the city. You can sign up to receive an alerts when the Insiders Guide is ready to be downloaded.
Cleaning up the Streets for RWC
Heart of the City has partnered with Auckland Council on a project called Beautify Your City, in an effort to clean up the CBD streets and educate residents on rubbish andrecycling in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup.

The project has been staged in 3 parts - with the third and final stage commencing on the 29 June. Our ambassadors will behand-delivering a promotional pack containing specially printed rubbish and recycling bags (see image on right) which will replace the current red rubbish bags and clear recycling bags to businesses in the CBD. So if you are a business in the city make sure you support the campaign by placing the Beautify Your City rubbish bags out on the curb-side during campaign time.
