Membership of Heart of the City

Heart of the City is an incorporated society and Auckland's city centre business association.
Membership is an important part of the organisation's governance and is available to eligible businesses and commercially rated property owners within the Heart of the City BID
boundary area who meet the eligibility requirements set out in the Constitution.

Who can become a member?
Businesses and commercially-rated property owners within the Heart of the City BID boundary area who meet the eligibility requirements set out in our constitution can apply to become members of Heart of the City, at no cost, and there’s lots of benefits to being involved.

Please note - Membership is not automatic. Being eligible to become a Member, does not make you a Member. Becoming a Member requires an application, the applicant's consent to membership, and approval in accordance with the Heart of the City Constitution and the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. 

As a Member, you become part of Auckland's city centre business association and have the opportunity to participate in the future direction of the organisation.

Full Members are entitled to attend and vote at General Meetings, stand for election to the Executive Committee, receive governance communications and organisational updates, and help shape the priorities and advocacy of Heart of the City in accordance with the Constitution. 

Key Membership Principles
Membership of Heart of the City is guided by the following principles:
  • Eligibility – Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements set out in the Constitution.
  • Consent – Membership is voluntary and requires the applicant's consent to become a Member. 
  • Approval – Applications are reviewed and approved in accordance with the Constitution and following membership verification processes & procedures.
  • Fairness and Transparency – Membership decisions are made consistently and fairly.
  • Participation – Members are encouraged to engage in the activities, governance and strategic direction of the organisation.

Benefits of Membership
As a Heart of the City Member, you can:

  • Stay better informed through regular updates and business insights.
  • Have your business listed on Heart of the City's website (where applicable).
  • Contribute to advocacy on matters affecting Auckland's city centre.
  • Help shape the future priorities of the organisation through member engagement and participation.
  • If you are a Full Member, exercise voting rights and other governance rights provided under the Constitution.
Applying for Membership
Eligible businesses and commercially rated property owners may apply for membership at no cost.

Submission of an application does not automatically confer membership. Applications are assessed against the eligibility requirements set out in the Constitution and considered in accordance with the Constitution and established membership procedures. Applicants will be notified once their membership has been approved and entered into the Register of Members. 

For Members that are not individuals, the Constitution requires the Member to designate an individual representative to act on its behalf in relation to Heart of the City matters. Heart of the City may take reasonable steps to confirm that a nominated representative is authorised to act for the Member entity.
