Federal Street – Proposed Designs
Auckland Council's shared space upgrade programme continues to transform the way our city streets look and work. Shared spaces are intended to be pedestrian-friendly destinations where you can shop, sit, relax, linger, dine and spend time.
Federal Street Consultation
The next shared space upgrade off the ranks is Federal St and the Sky Tower plaza, with the $10m project co-funded by Council and SKYCITY. The plan aims to integrate the area with other city centre upgrade and transport projects, to provide an intimate, high quality pedestrian-focused street that encourages pedestrian activity and to support local businesses and attract investment by providing an appropriate level of vehicular movement and servicing activity. For more information about the planned upgrade, please visit the Auckland Council website. Submissions on the upgrade are open until 5pm on 30 November.
Fort Street Evaluation
O'Connell Street Progress
Public consultation on O’Connell Street took place in August 2012. Construction is scheduled for mid-2013. More information on the project can be found on the Auckland Council website.
Fort Street Evaluation
Council's newly released evaluation of the Fort St shared space area reveals that the upgrade has made a large and positive impact in the area. Foot traffic has increased by 50 percent during peak hours, vehicle speeds have reduced by more than 25 percent and 75 percent of property owners in the area feel it is valuable being sited near or adjacent to a shared space. Most impressively, hospitality spend in the immediate area has increased by over 400 per cent. For the full report or to learn more about the Fort St upgrade, visit the Auckland Council website.
