Ultrafast Broadband Rollout – High Street District

News story
Thursday 19 Dec 2013

The network upgrades to enable Ultra Fast Broadband in the High Street District (including O’Connell Street, High Street and Vulcan Lane) will begin next Friday 27 December. The programme of works has being rolling out in the Central City over the last 20 months, and to date has been delivered reasonably successfully. We want it to remain that way.

Here is what is planned:

Over the course of six days there will be 15 sites (as identified on the attached map) in the footpath in Vulcan Lane (on the northern side), High Street (between Vulcan Lane and Victoria Street) and O’Connell Street to allow new connections. In addition, there will be three trenches cut in the road (two in High Street, and one in Vulcan Lane).

Trenches in the footpath will allow for lateral ducts to be connected to each property. To get the work done in the quickest possible way, Visionstream have chosen to work in all three streets at the same time. The first three days will be see the majority of disruption, with the cutting of trenches, excavation and the two road closures. The last three days will be largely reinstatement.

What you need to know:

Dates: 27/28//30/31 December and 3/ 4 January

General work hours: 0630 to 7pm. Crews will work till 12pm in Vulcan Lane and till 12pm on 31 December.

Road Closures:

  • O’Connell Street, between Chancery and Shortland Street – 27 December (their transport approval allows for longer but it is not likely to be needed).
  • High Street, between Freyberg Square and Victoria Street – 27/28 December (their transport approval allows it to be closed for longer but it is not likely to be needed). The road will  reopen in the evenings on both days.

Access:

  • pedestrian access will be maintained to premises at all times, using pedestrian bridges where necessary
  •  pedestrian access along the streets will be maintained. Where the footpath is not available, pedestrians will rerouted along the road, adjacent to the footpath
  •  vehicles will be able to access the district via High Street and Chancery. Detours will be in place on the 27/28 December during the road closures.

Parking

  • some carparking will be removed during the works in the area of the road closures and to allow pedestrian access where the footpath is closed
  • access to the Victoria Street carpark will remain during the works – remember its $3 p/h M-F during the day, and $2 p/hour in the evenings and weekends

On site assistance:

  • there will be plenty of on the ground staff who will be able to help you
Visionstream have advised they will seek to minimise the impact in the following ways:
  • opening the road closures in the evening, and reopening as soon as possible (anticipate 2 days for High Street, 1 day for O’Connell Street
  •  minimising the amount of construction signage in the area
  • enable/facilitate deliveries/picks up for business via onsite STMS’s
  • sawcutting carried out in the morning
  • minimise the number of onsite construction vehicles

We will also brief our Ambassador team on what is happening so they can communicate to visitors that the district is open for business.

A map outlining the work areas is available here.
