Urban Regeneration and Renewal:
A beginners guide
Dr Tim Williams - CEO Committee for Sydney
Tim Williams is recognised as one of the UK’s thought-leaders in urban regeneration and economic development.
As CEO of the Thames Gateway London Partnership, Tim had a formative role in developing East London which is Europe’s most significant urban regeneration initiative.
This development included the creation of a national urban regeneration organisation called the Homes and Communities Agency with a $5b annual budget and the $25b Crossrail project which will bring further major renewal opportunities to Thames Gateway.
In this role, Tim was successful in attracting billions of investment in infrastructure to this part of the capital and played a part in securing the Olympic Games for the area. He then became a top UK government advisor on cities and urban renewal.
Tim's work for the Committee for Sydney on the Big City policy issues has seen that organisation double its membership under his management to become a key player in policy-making for Sydney. Its work with the NSW Government on developing Sydney as a Global Talent Hub has been innovative and has had impact both on public policy and private sector best practice.
Tim has been brought to Auckland to advise on The Southern Initiative (TSI) , one of the two top place-based initiatives in the Auckland Plan. TSI is a major economic, social development and urban regeneration programme in the south of Auckland. It is a partnership involving Auckland Council including Local Boards, Government, Iwi, Pacific and ethnic groups, business and community.
The world's best practice lessons from the urban regeneration of East London can be applied to the transformation of southern Auckland.
