Celebrating Christmas and supporting a successful season for business

News story
Thursday 15 Nov 2018

We’re celebrating one of the city’s special occasions and supporting this important time for business with our annual Christmas decorations and marketing campaign.

We hope to see a similarly successful Christmas season for the city centre as we did last year, with strong performance in spending, transactions and pedestrian counts.

Creating a festive environment

It’s important to make the city centre feel extra special at this time of year, so we’ve again decked our streets and public spaces out with festive flair, from the inimitable giant Santa to a newly expanded set of illuminated giant Christmas sculptures by Angus Muir Design. You can see exactly what decorations go where, here

Our recently upgraded Queen Street Lights, in partnership with Vector and Auckland Council, will also be adding to the festive environment with a celebratory glow.

Late Night Christmas

We’re adding a new Christmas occasion to the city’s calendar and supporting the late night economy with our new Late Night Christmas event on Thursday 20 December - right in time for the, ‘oh gosh, it's Christmas next week’ gift rush.

90 stores in the Queen and High Street districts and Britomart will be open late and over 25 performances by a diverse and sophisticated array of acts are scheduled in and around Queen Street, Elliott Street and Freyberg Place. Britomart and SKYCITY are also hosting late night entertainment on the evening.

Full event details will be announced on Monday 26 November.

Marketing

This year we're showcasing the unique experiences, celebrations, gifts and events to be found in the city centre with an integrated marketing campaign. Keep an eye out for adshels, posters, radio and lots of online activity and check out the campaign website heartofthecity.co.nz/explore/christmas
