Picturing the city's new downtown square

News story
Tuesday 3 Oct 2017

Concepts have been released for the new square for Lower Queen Street in front of Britomart train station, which will be completed as part of the City Rail Link works.

Attractive public spaces like this are essential in making cities vibrant and a great place to be, with room for people to gather and pause. Events, celebrations and civic gatherings will all have a place here.

Public spaces bring economic benefit too - people will be attracted to the area, and they'll want to spend time there, which means spending at retail and hospitality businesses in the area. Local workers will also benefit from having a place to relax and get fresh air.

The square is a real opportunity for the city to make a memorable impression on visitors due to the unique placement of the area. It connects the Waterfront, Britomart and Queen Street areas as a welcoming zone for people entering the city via train, bus, ferry and cruise ships and will showcase the wonderful heritage of the CPO building that houses the Britomart train station and the new landmark Commercial Bay development.

We think this can be a really special addition to the downtown area and the city as a whole, and look forward to seeing the designs progress.

Find out more about the concept design on the City Rail Link website.
