How can we, as Aucklanders, connect to the creation and reception of public art? How can we articulate what public art the city needs and how it’s delivered? Join Metro editor Simon Wilson and Chicago-based curator Mary Jane Jacob as they frame up the debate.

Mary Jane Jacob is a pioneer in the areas of public, site-specific and socially engaged art. Having served as the Chief Curator of the Museums of Contemporary Art in Chicago and Los Angeles, Mary Jane Jacob shifted her workplace from the museum to the street to critically engage the discourse around public space. Mary Jane Jacob is currently a Professor of Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Executive Director of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies.

The global conversation on public art has shifted from traditional monuments to community-driven projects, from bold declarations to contextual artistry. Auckland is catching up and changing its view. In a city that is under transformation, the time is ripe for a new direction for art in our public places.

Following the presentation there will be the opportunity to join in a panel Q+A with Nat Cheshire of Cheshire Architects and Kaye Glamuzina – Manager Public Art to discuss what public art can do for a city, its place in creating the world’s most liveable city. Councillor Alf Filapaina will open the event and Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse will give the vote of thanks.
