Getting in and around the city centre

With fuel prices in the spotlight recently, we wanted to share the many ways to move around the city centre, along with information to help businesses support their teams’ commute.

Public Transport

There's plenty of ways to get in and around the city centre using public transport. From ferrying across the harbour to hopping on a train, or bus services that connect every corner of the city. Keep up to date via the Auckland Transport website

Use an AT HOP card and pay no more than $50 for PT trips over 7 days. Valid on AT buses, trains and inner harbour ferries. T&Cs apply. Contactless payments excluded. More information is here

Auckland Transport's Fareshare Programme

Auckland Transport’s Fareshare programme allows businesses to subsidise staff public transport without fringe benefit tax or administrative fees. Since launching two years ago, 85 companies have signed up. They report a range of reasons for joining, including manageable costs, simple setup, flexibility, and the lack of any long‑term commitment. Employers can choose subsidy levels of 25%, 50%, or 75% and whether weekend travel is included. More information is available here

Extraordinary benefit, Inland Revenue approved

Businesses can help their teams save 30% or more on public transport costs without increasing salaries or benefit budgets, and with little to no additional cost to their organisation. Extraordinary is New Zealand’s only Inland Revenue‑approved way for employees to pay for public transport using pre‑tax income. This helps employees save while reducing FBT. Offered through salary reduction or as part of total remuneration, it can also lower gross payroll, reducing KiwiSaver and ACC contributions and helping offset the platform cost. Learn more.

Cycling

There are lots of cycle networks that keep the city centre well connected to neighbouring suburbs and make it easy to get around the area. Cyclists can choose from a variety of parking options, including e-bike charging, standard racks and covered spots.

Locky Docks provide cyclists with free, secure parking and charging for bikes and e‑scooters. Users simply locate, dock, lock, and optionally charge their bikes using the Bikeep app or a compatible card. More information is available here.

Car Share Options

Zilch and Cityhop offer car sharing by the hour or for longer periods, with vehicles returned to set locations. Zilch offers an all‑electric fleet. Both providers offer options for personal and business use.

50% off parking in the city centre during nights and weekend parking in Wilson Carparks for the month of April 2026.  Weekdays from 4 pm to 6 am and all day weekends. Enter promo code HOTC50 in the ParkMate app before beginning your session.

Is the cost of fuel affecting your business?

Heart of the City advocates for issues that matter to Auckland businesses. We are currently gathering feedback from businesses impacted by fuel costs.

We would really value hearing whether you are already experiencing, or anticipating, practical impacts from the National Fuel Plan discussions.

Even brief, real‑world examples are incredibly helpful. They allow us to ground our advocacy in lived experience and clearly demonstrate how fuel costs are affecting day‑to‑day business operations.
