The Blue Rose – A New NZ TV Series comes to the City Centre

News story
Tuesday 19 Jun 2012
South Pacific Pictures have begun shooting The Blue Rose, the latest comedy drama from the makers of Outrageous Fortune and The Almighty Johnsons, which reunites those Outrageous West sisters, Antonia Prebble and Siobhan Marshall. The series has its heart squarely in central Auckland, and what Outrageous Fortune did for West Auckland, and Go Girls did for North Shore, The Blue Rose will do for the City Centre – showing off our best inner city assets to the nation, and we hope bringing benefit to our HOTCity businesses.

Set in an inner city law firm (the film location is on Shortland Street), the show is based in and around downtown Auckland – from the high-rise office towers which provide the backdrop for daily business to the inner city’s bars and restaurants where the legal partners entertain clients and where the workers go to lunch.

Key Facts for HOTC Members:
• Filming dates for The Blue Rose are from early June to early October, with the production’s working week from Sunday to Thursday.
• Key locations featured during the series are going to be the Waterfront and Viaduct as well as Shortland Street and High Street precincts
• Inner city location scenes comprise approximately 20% of the production
• The production team will be shooting the majority of interior scenes at their Albany studios.
• The production team acknowledge the challenge of shooting in an inner city environment, and are using a ‘minimise their footprint’ approach to minimise any disruption to business.

Consultation with Business
The production company will undertake direction consultation with businesses in the shoot areas before each shoot occurs, and Heart of the City will be working closely with the Production Company throughout to ensure that any disruption to business is minimised and assisting where we can to make this a positive experience for all.

A number of businesses have provided positive feedback to the filming so far, noting increased business and no disruptions.

We are fully supportive and excited about this shoot coming to the City Centre – and are proud that we can ‘show off’ what we have to offer to the nation. Heart of the City are currently working with Auckland Tourism Economic Events and Development (ATEED) as they develop their regional Filming Protocol, which sets out the way in which filming can occur across the region. Our input is specifically around what principles we would like to see agreed for filming in and around business areas to ensure that filming activity does not disrupt day to day business.
