Feedback wanted on Draft Parking Discussion Document
Auckland Transport is currently undertaking a parking discussion as part of a review of all aspects of parking in Auckland and is wanting public feedback on its Draft Parking Discussion Document. The review looks at the use of Park and Rides, residential parking zones, managing on and off street parking in the central city, clearest times on arterial roads and parking in town centres.
What does the proposed strategy mean for the city centre?
- Continue to manage parking based on demand. Since this was introduced into the city centre in 2012, access and availability of parking both on street and off street has become easier. It works by managing pricing based on demand – meaning that when parking spaces are easy to find, the price may drop and when you can never find a park the price would rise to make sure that there is always at least 15% of carparking spaces available. It is based on the very successful San Francisco model.
- The strategy also looks to encourage visitor parking at Council carpark buildings. We will continue to see good value pricing in the buildings for short term visits ($3 p/h on peak and $2 p/h off peak). The strategy also proposes to making more short term carparks available– encouraging increased visitation to the city centre, outside of the congested peak times and providing greater certainty for visitors over trying to find a park on the street.
The reduction of long term commuter parking in Council carparks – encouraging access into the city via other modes at peak times
- The proposed trebling of spaces for park and rides will make it easier for commuters to use public transport to access the city centre
- Removing the majority of contractors permits – with the exception of essential service vehicles. We hope this will reduce the number of contractor’s vehicles parking on streets all day which affects the availability of parking spaces for visitors and those doing business in the city. These vehicles will need to pay for parking like everyone else – and we hope that when they need to be in the city all day to service businesses that they choose to park their vehicles in off street carpark buildings.
