Gallery on track for NZ's finest art collection

Behind the construction hoardings on Wellesley and Kitchener streets in the city, a team of specialists and artisans are busy restoring and reconstructing Auckland Art Gallery's main building.

The development project includes heritage restoration of the 1887 and 1916 components of the building as well as strengthening, expansion and modernisation. At its peak, the project will employ up to 400 people, both onsite and offsite.

When complete it will provide an iconic building appropriate to house the country's finest art collection, which will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The building is expected to be ready to open by mid-2011and will provide:
  • at least 50 per cent more space for collection displays and exhibitions
  • dedicated teaching areas for students and family-friendly interactive spaces
  • a landscaped pedestrian link between Kitchener Street and Albert Park
  • a sculpture terrace on the eastern edge of the building at tree-top level
  • a shop, a cafe, a terrace-level coffee bar and purpose-designed function facilities
  • family-friendly interactive spaces specially designed for the younger visitor
  • Maori design integrated throughout the building.
