The LEGO Christmas tree is in the city

News story
Friday 18 Nov 2016

Soaring higher than a two-storey house and built from over half a million LEGO bricks, the LEGO Christmas Tree will be officially switched on by Auckland Mayor Phil Goff on Friday 25 November during a free public event at Aotea Square.

Above: The LEGO Christmas tree was flocked by hundreds of people when it visited Melbourne. The Auckland LEGO tree will have a distinctly kiwiana-flavour.

The giant LEGO Christmas Tree stands at over 10 metres tall, weighs 3.5 tonnes and took more than 1,200 hours to build.

Decorated with some distinctly kiwi-flavoured festive additions including a life-size Santa with a surfboard, a pukeko and a kiwi, the spectacular Christmas tree will come to life each evening from 25th November – 27 December with a festive light and sound show as part of Auckland Live’s Summer in the Square.

As there are a number of projects in the city centre affecting access, allow extra time and plan ahead before coming into town. Consider using public transport, cycling or walking as alternatives to travelling by car. To plan your journey using public transport, visit www.at.govt.nz or download the AT Metro app.
