Upcoming Events and Road Closures

There are a number of events and activations taking place in the city centre over the coming months that will bring road closures to specific surrounding areas. Most significantly, the Queen Street Golden Mile will be taking place on 1 April the ITU World Triathlon Series returns on 6 – 7 April.

Fashion in the BIG little City: High Street District Market Day and Pop-Up City Sounds
Saturday 9 March

As part of Fashion in the BIG little City, we are holding a market day showcasing the best of the High Street District’s quirky fashion culture in Freyburg Square. George FM will also be bringing activation into the city with a roaming pop-up live music activation.

Road closures: Freyberg Place closed from 8am – 6pm, Darby Street closed 10.30am – 3pm.

Round the Bays
Sunday 10 March, start time 9.30am

Ports of Auckland Round the Bays has been an annual event in Auckland since 1972, when the Auckland Joggers Club initiated it. The event is now one of the world's largest fun-runs with nearly 40,000 registered runners and an estimated 70,000 participants.

Road closures: Quay Street (between Tangihua St and The Strand) closed from 5am - 1pm, Quay Street (between Lower Albert St and the Strand), Tinley Street, Tooley Street, Plumer Street, The Strand (between Gladstone Rd and Tamaki Dr), Solent Street, Hapimana Street, Tamaki Drive (between The Strand and Goldie St), The Parade (between Tamaki Dr and Goldie St) & Goldie Streetclosed from 6am - 1pm.

Queen Street Golden Mile
Monday 1 April (Easter Monday), event takes place 1pm – 5pm

The Queen Street Golden Mile is returning to Queen Street after a 30 year hiatus. Run by the Sir John Walker Field of Dreams Foundation charity, this 1 mile downhill running race features international athletic talent as well as age-group and corporate competitors.

Road closures: Queen Street (from Mayoral Drive to Quay Street) from 11am – 7pm
Parking restrictions: No parking from 9am – 7pm on Queen Street (from Mayoral Drive to Quay Street ), Mayoral Drive (from Greys Avenue to Wakefield Street), Lorne Street (eastern side of Wellesley Street East to Victoria Street East) and High Street (eastern side from Victoria Street East to Shortland Street).

Public transport: All bus stops from lower Queen Street relocated to Britomart Precinct, specifically Customs Street East and Commerce Street, and Albert Street for Northern buses. To allow for this, access to the following streets will be limited to residents, businesses and bus access only – Commercial Street, Customs Street East, Galway Street, Quay Street and Tyler Street (from Britomart Place to Commercial Street). Maxx ambassadors will be onsite to assist departing and arriving passengers with the relocated bus stops.

ITU World Triathlon Series – Barfoot & Thompson World Triathlon Auckland
6 – 7 April

The ITU World Triathlon Series is a series of seven events, ending with a Grand Final. The 2013 ITU World Triathlon Series kicks off on 6 and 7 April in Auckland, featuring Open and Teams Sprint and Standard distance races, Twilight Swim Run, 5km brunch run, ParaTriathlon, along with Elite Men and Women races.

Road closures: A number of roads and streets will be closed or have managed access over 6 and 7 April. Please see the Auckland Transport website for full road closure information.

Queen Street Pit Stops, part of the ITM 400 V8 Supercar event
Thursday 11 April, 11am – 4pm

This ITM 400 satellite event will see four pit stops set up around lower Queen Street, each themed in line with one of the car manufacturers racing at Pukekohe. Nissan will be in Queen Elizabeth Square, Holden at 21 Queen Street (cnr Custom Street West and Queen Street), Ford at the corner of Fort Street and Queen Street and Mercedes at the corner of Vulcan Lane and Queen Street.

Road closures: Fort Street shared space (between Jean Batten Road and Queen Street) from 6am - 5pm

Parking restrictions: Parking will be restricted on Queen Street (eastern side only) between Vulcan Lane and Customs Street East to accommodate display cars.
