Working to minimise criminal behaviour and nuisance in the city

News story
Friday 25 Jan 2013

We know it's summer when the sun stays out longer … and when our city pavements become homes for all and sundry looking to peddle their wares or looking for a hand out.

Some say it is part of the diversity of big city living and this is fine… until it impacts on your ability to carry out your business in a safe environment.

It’s for this reason that the private street security service that patrol the city and the police are carrying out increased joint patrols and working with a ‘zero tolerance’ policy to tidy up this growing element in the city.

BUT, we still need your help. There are two levels of potential offending – criminal and nuisance and each requires a different response.

If you witness or experience any criminal behaviour please report it immediately by contacting the Police on 111. Your anonymity will be ensured. The Police have given us an undertaking to respond promptly.

If you experience any nuisance behaviour then please contact our private security service directly by calling Darran Wikeepa on 379 8000 or 027 585 7134.

For clarity, criminal behaviour is likely to fall into the following categories:

  • Not observing the liquor ban in public spaces
  • Intimidating behaviour
  • Disorderly behaviour (including swearing or urinating in public spaces)
  • Use of or handling of drugs
  • Trespassing on private property (in most cases the entrances to business premises are private property over which the owner has discretion)

Public nuisance is:

  • Obstruction of public space e.g. sleeping on footpath
  • Signage outside business perimeters on public spaces
  • Solvent abuse
  • Anti-social behaviour causing disruption or disorder on public space
  • Street trading on public property

NOTE also that the First Security team who are patrolling more regularly are available as a conduit for you to the Police also. Please make yourself known to them.
