Heart of the City is able to support hospitality businesses with outdoor dining support grants of up to $1,500 (made possible with support from Auckland Council and the City Centre Targeted Rate) to enable trading under COVID-19 restrictions. We welcome you to apply for these, please find out more, including how to apply, below.

Outdoor dining support grants

  • One-off cash grants are available for hospitality businesses located within the Heart of the City boundary
  • Grants are to be used to contribute to the costs of establishing or extending outdoor dining spaces to enable trading under COVID-19 restrictions
  • Grants can be used for things like purchasing or hiring outdoor umbrellas or seating
  • Grants cannot be used for paying for fees including existing outdoor trading licences or alcohol licenses
  • Grants of up to $1,500 per business location will be considered. If you have extraordinary requirements, please get in touch to discuss your needs.
  • Grants are funded by the City Centre Targeted Rate

Grant application and consideration

  • Applications are to be made by email:
    • To:
    • Subject: Outdoor dining grant
    • Please provide detail of how the grant would be used to enable trading under COVID-19 restrictions, this may include the items you would purchase or hire using the grant
  • Applications are open until the sooner of:
    • Auckland returning to Alert Level 1 or level Green
    • 18 February 2022
    • The grant funds are exhausted
  • HOTC will confirm, decline, or request further details if necessary, by email to the applicant within 3 working days of receiving the application [Please note we will not be reviewing grants from 22 December through to 17 January].

Grant payment

  • Businesses that have had their grant confirmed are to invoice Heart of the City, ensuring the invoice includes:
    • Date
    • Invoice must be made out to Heart of the City
    • No GST applies, so please ensure GST is not included on the invoice
    • Copies of receipts or invoices for the goods purchased or hired using the grant
  • Invoices must be received by Heart of the City by the 2nd day of the month following invoice date (please note Christmas variations to this below)
  • Payment will be made on the 20th of the month following invoice date
  • Over the Christmas period, please note the following changes to the above process:
    • ​​January payment run: Invoices received by Heart of the City between 14 December and 9 January (extended deadline due to Christmas break) will be processed for payment on 20 January

Complying with regulations

  • Grant recipients must ensure that any outdoor dining operations with funding from an outdoor dining support grant must comply with all Acts and Bylaws, including but not limited to:
    • Trading and Events in Public Places Bylaw 2015 (from 26 February 2022, this will be replaced by the Public Trading, Events and Filming Bylaw 2022)
    • Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
  • Grant recipients must ensure that any relevant permits and/or licenses are in place
