Accessing Wynyard Quarter

News story
Thursday 9 May 2024

Critical work is underway to fix the bridge and is expected to be completed by Summer 2024. Whilst we continue to advocate for additional access, in the meantime, the area can be accessed by:

  • Buses, including the City Link Bus: Runing every seven minutes between 6 am and midnight, 7 days a week between the Wynyard Quarter and the city centre. Alternatively, there's the 20 and 75 buses.

  • The walking route around the Viaduct Basin

  • Free Ferry from 8 am to 5.30 pm. The ferry is free, but small, with a capacity of 60 people. This will be in place until a temporary water-level pontoon has been completed.

  • Temporary water-level pedestrian pontoon across the Viaduct Harbour. There will be access between Te Wero Island and Wynyard Quarter (Karanga Tidal Steps) - see the concept render below.
    • It is expected to take around 12 weeks for the pontoon to be fully completed and ready for public use.
    • The free ferry will continue to run until the pontoon is completed.
    • The pontoon will then stay in place until the Wynyard Bridge is fully operational, which is anticipated to be by late 2024.

Full details about the pontoon can be found here
