The Aotearoa Bike Challenge
With works underway to create a cycle-way on Victoria Street and Uber tipped to launch shared dockless e-bikes on Auckland's streets in the coming months, we are likely going to be seeing more bikes on city centre streets. Next month however, there will be an extra special reason for people to get cycling.
Returning again this February, the Aotearoa Bike Challenge (formerly the Auckland Bike Challenge) is a month-long challenge that encourages Kiwis to make everyday trips by bike, offering the chance to win some great prizes along the way.
Workplaces are encouraged to sign up teams - and we'd love to see city centre businesses taking part.
What does it involve?
All you need to do to take part is register a team from your workplace and commit to cycling at least 10 minutes a day during the month of February.
What's in it for me?
Aside from the obvious health and fitness benefits (plus fewer cars on the road), there are lots of prizes to be won along the way, including brand new e-bikes as well gift vouchers, adventure gear and more.
You can also track how you're faring against other teams so it's a great opportunity for a bit of friendly workplace competition.
How does it work?
You and your team earn points for every km you ride, every day you ride, and for every person you encourage to sign-up (they don't have to be in your team - they just have to log at least one ride).
Need another reason to ride?
The Aotearia Bike Challenge is teaming up with Variety, the Children’s Charity again this year to be able to give participants the opportunity to raise funds to get disadvantaged Kiwi kids riding as well. Last year 80 kids received their very own brand-new bike and helmet thanks to the fund-raising efforts of Bike Challenge participants! There are lots of ways to raise money, through personal donations or even by businesses sponsoring their own staff per km travelled.
If you’re not signed up be sure to get registered before 1 Feb to go in the draw to win an e-bike, then log your rides and encourage your team mates to move up the leaderboard!
