A strong finish to 2018

The results are in

Our latest Marketview quarterly report shows the city centre ended 2018 on a high with consumers spending $470 million in the city centre during October – December, up 2.5% on the same period in 2017, with transactions also up 6.5% to 10.7 million.

The results are particularly heartening given that Auckland’s other retail areas (HOTC competitors) saw decreases of 3% and 4% in spending and transactions respectively during the last quarter 2018.

The city centre’s solid finish to 2018 comes on the back of a period of long term growth which has seen consumer spending throughout 2018 rise 8.5% when compared with 2015 (an increase of $136.2 million).

A cracking Christmas

We ran our annual Christmas campaign in the six weeks from 19 November – 31 December 2018, promoting the city centre as the place to be at Christmas.   

The Marketview report for the six-week campaign period shows consumer spending in the city centre was up 3% (while HOTC competitors saw a 3% decrease). There was particularly strong growth in spending in certain categories including hospitality (+8%), fashion (7%) and other retail (+8%).

Christmas Eve and Boxing Day also saw bumper spending with Christmas Eve up 20% and Boxing Day up 17%. 

Other topline results (October – December 2018)

  • The week which saw the highest spending was w/c 17 December
  • The categories with the highest growth in spend were Attractions (+15%), Hospitality incl. Bars, Pubs and Clubs (+8%) and Fashion (+6%)
  • The city centre saw the biggest growth in visits from Manukau City (+10%)
